ESSAY #1, PART 1

ESSAY #1, PART 1

600 Words

Technology has taken over our lives, especially mine. Life before technology was more simple and authentic. Nick Carr seemed to think so too in his article “Is Google Making Us Stupis”. Now it is like we are all living through the internet. In person interactions are less common and shockingly not necessary in the world we are living in. This new world we all live in has changed many aspects of our day to day lives and caused us to have experiences we would have never imagined. Technology and the internet have had a large toll on my life, such as damaged relationships, education struggles, and eliminated genuine social interactions. Yes, technology has improved and enhanced our lives but I feel there are more negatives than positives to the ongoing advances in technology.

Friends always come and go and it is never easy to make true friends. Technology has not made it any easier to find real, genuine friends. Nowadays most relationships are made over social media. No one ever wants to go on a date or just spend time together. They would rather just call you real quick so that they can get on with their day, or text you to make it more convenient for their schedules. Also it is hard to trust people now that the internet is a larger part of our lives because it is way easier to turn your back on someone, lie, or post false information on the internet. There are so many friendships currently being destroyed by the internet because of false rumors traveling on the web. I had a boyfriend who never wanted to put in any effort or give me the time of day. All he wanted to do was play video games and sit on his phone. It got to the point where he didn’t even want to take the effort to call me. He would rather send a text. He didn’t want to go on dates or have in person conversations. He preferred to just text me but it is extremely hard to understand emotions over text. I always wanted to experience the world together but he was too caught up in technology and didn’t want to get out and explore life together. This relationship was not only damaged and destroyed because of the internet but it will never be the same again. I can only imagine I am not the only person that had a similar experience because the internet is changing the way people interact. Communication will continue to become harder as technology develops and relationships with friends, family, and significant others are all based on communication.

Technology has had a major impact on the education field probably more than any other field. Majority of work and teaching takes place through screens and with online interactive tools. There is not much pen and paper used in classrooms anymore; it is all computers and projectors. Some think this is the greatest technological advancement that could have ever happened for teachers and students, but personally as a student it has made my learning experience extremely difficult. Growing up I have always struggled with reading and writing. I always had a lower reading level than what I was supposed to have and always had the hardest time comprehending what I was reading. This trans;ated over into my writing because I wrote at the level I read because of lack of vocabulary and grammar. To this day I struggle with reading comprehension and technology is not making it any easier. The majority of books are now ebooks and not having the physical book in hand to read along with makes my education struggles even more extreme. I also learn more from writing my work and with having everything online that aspect of my education is completely eliminated. There are many resources around me from teachers to tutors that can help me with my education struggles because of technology, but not every student has access to these resources. These struggles are only going to get worse with the ongoing advancements in technology but I hope others with my struggles can get the help they need in the classroom.

Dating in our current world with the technology that we have is extremely difficult. Back in previous generations most if not all interactions were in person. Now everything is online over text, phone call, or social media. People don’t meet up and go on dates anymore. If I could, I think that I would choose to have grown up in a different generation because I would enjoy face to face interactions way more than this online world that we live in. It is extremely difficult to have genuine conversations over the internet. You can never tell how people actually feel or if their thoughts and feelings are truthful and genuine. I have had a few boyfriends and communication has always been an issue. Also I think technology has made it more difficult to have conversations with teachers too. A lot of meetings with teachers are over email and xoom where it would be easier to learn and talk if it was in person. The majority of social interactions have been eliminated since the internet and technology, and I feel there would be a much better environment to live in if the majority of conversations and interactions were in person.

I agree with Nick Carr’s predictions that he had about technology and what he thought Google and the internet would do to people. It is crazy to see how accurately his thoughts from 208 have really come to life in the current day. Technology is not as bad as he predicted it to be and I would go as far as saying we are all “pancake people ”, but I would say that it is blowing our education and social levels. Technology is a huge part of my life and is a major resource I can’t imagine life without, but I also think it would be beneficial to be used less. People rely too much on technology and need to get out in the world and experience life for themselves without technology. There is a big world out there and it should be explored.

Final Revised

Technology has taken over our lives, especially mine. Life before technology was more simple and authentic. Nick Carr seemed to think so too in his article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid”. Yes, technology has improved and enhanced our lives but it has severely damaged communication skills in all aspects of life.

Friends always come and go and it is never easy to make true friends. Technology has not made it any easier to find real, genuine friendships. My best friend and I had a falling out a few years ago because she thought I was talking about her based on what she heard on social media. She never came and talked to me face to face. We ended up having an in person conversation after a year and it was all just a big misunderstanding. We had lost a year of time all over a misunderstanding because the internet has sensitized us to having hard conversations. I can only imagine I am not the only person that had a similar experience because the internet is changing the way people interact. There are so many friendships currently being destroyed by the internet because of false rumors traveling on the web. This makes it so much harder to trust people because you never know what they could be posting or have the opportunity to share on social media. I’ve seen many friendships get destroyed because of things they heard or rumors they’ve assumed from the internet. Communication will continue to become harder as technology develops and relationships with friends, family, and significant others are all based on communication.

Technology has had a major impact on the education field possibly more than any other field. Majority of work and teaching takes place through screens and with online interactive tools. There is rarely pen and paper used in classrooms anymore; it is all computers and projectors. This translated over into my writing because I wrote at the level I read, because of my lack of vocabulary and grammar. To this day I struggle with reading comprehension and technology has not made it any easier. The majority of books are now ebooks and not having the physical book in hand to read along with makes my education struggles even more extreme. Our current generation is more focused on the environment than any past generations. These ebooks are not only more convenient to students but they are also helping our environment by using less paper. This is great but personally I learn more from writing my work and with everything being online that aspect of my education was completely eliminated. There are many resources around me, from teachers to tutors that can help me with my education struggles because of technology. On the other hand not every student has access to these resources. Also I think technology has made it more difficult to have conversations with teachers. A lot of meetings with teachers are over email and zoom where it would be easier to learn and talk if it was in person.  These struggles are only going to get worse with the ongoing advancements in technology but I hope others with my struggles can get the help they need in the classroom.

It is extremely difficult to have genuine conversations over the internet. You can never tell how people actually feel or if their thoughts and feelings are truthful and genuine. I have had a few boyfriends and communication has always been an issue. If there is no communication in a relationship it is more than likely that it can’t work. The framing and structure of relationships is all based on talking and if we aren’t able to communicate with each other as humans we will never feel satisfied in our relationships. The majority of these social interactions have been eliminated since the internet and technology, and I feel there would be a much better environment to live in if the majority of conversations and interactions were in person.

I agree with Nick Carr’s predictions that he had about technology and what he thought Google and the internet would do to people.
