ESSAY #1, PART 2

750 Words

Everyone has a slightly different opinion on how they think technology is affecting humans, but Caden Colburn, Alexander Yeaton and Kevin Kelley seem to agree with each other. In the essay “Technophilia” by Kevin Kelley he talks about the love of technology and how people in our current day feel love towards technology. Not only do they feel love of technology but they feel they are getting affection back. Personally I feel technology is taking over the world. Someday technology is going to grow so large that it will be bigger than us. We will be living through technology and human interactions. In person conversations and interactions will be eliminated and it will be all through phones and the internet. Yeaton and Colburn talked a lot about how they believe they would not be able to live without technology in their technology essays. Yeaton believes this will end up being bad and that technology should be used less but since he grew up in a full technology generation he doesn’t know any difference. Colburn on the other hand thinks technology is the best thing that could have happened. His thoughts on technology were all positive and how it helped him grow and flourish in life. He doesnt think he would be as happy and be able to live his day to day life because currently all of his joy and happiness originated from technology. Even though Kelley, Coburn, and Yeaton share the same opinion on technology doesn’t mean it is correct or we all need to think the same.

Kelley has a strong love for technology and believes that our generation would not be able to live without it because we have created this undeniable bond with technology. Colburn’s essay is a prime example of this bond in real life. In “Technophillia” Kelley speaks a lot about how technology is constantly expanding. “The net is now vastly wider… than I can imagine,…I feel amputated when I am away from it.”(Kelley 5) The way Kelley uses the word amputated to describe his connection to technology is extremely interesting. He is comparing in a way the loss of a human body part to losing say your phone. How did we get to the point where a simple tool has now become something we are lost without. We wouldnt know what to do or how to live because it is absorbing our life. Colburn based on his technology essay feels this sense of amputation when it comes to technology; “I think I would never learn the same way without all the resources we have access to.”(Colburn) If Colburn had lost these technological resources we have in the classroom he believes he would never learn the same. His education would be flipped upside down just at the loss of technology. His bond with technology had grown so big just like Kelley’s has that he wouldn’t be able to learn without it. How have we gotten to this point? Has technology just grown so large that it is now a part of us just like our arms or legs. While technology is definitely expanding to be a larger part of our lives year by year, I never thought it would grow to this point. People including myself in my generation are depending more on technology each day to a point where eventually we will never be able to live without it. We will be living through technology.

Our relationship with technology has been continuously growing each day and will continue to for the rest of our lives. Kelley constantly talks about how we as humans fall in love easily and are constantly searching for affection to the point that we believe we are getting this affection for technology. Yeaton talks in his essay how our relationship with technology and in a way refers to technology as it is like a significant other. He talks about how relationships grow and can either end like a fairy tale or heartbreak. Just like a relationship would with a human in the real world but in this case it’s technology. Kelley feels the same when he says, “Humans will treat any minimally anthropomorphized droid like it not only deserves our affections, but in some strange way is returning our love.”(Kelley 9) Instead of looking to humans for love we are turning to technology. Not only does it seem easier but it eliminates peoples feelings of communication. They don’t have to have those hard conversations with technology like they would have to have with a significant other. Technology will always be there and always love them. What does this mean for love in future generations though? Will less people fall in love and start relationships because they are absorbed in technology. Well, Yeaton stated in his essay, “Humans have a very unique and ever-evolving relationship with it, and as we grow with this technology it can change our experience for better or for worse.”(Yeaton) He directly talks about this relationship Kelley was talking about and how it is so unique and going to grow even if it may have a negative impact. We will continue to love technology and that love will only grow stronger as there are new advancements in technology overtime.

While this could be negative at this rate I don’t think there is much controlling the love people have for technology.

Kelley, Yeaton, and Colburn all have a variation of the same view on how technology is affecting humans. I understand their view and where they are coming from because life without technology would be much of a life at all. I do believe that if we had less technology it would be beneficial, or even if we slowed down the development of more upcoming technology that it would also make a huge difference. Us as humans are obsessed with technology and feel the need to have every new advancement immediately. I personally feel it is more of a want than a need. We technically don’t need any of this new technology that is being created, we just want it because we are fascinated by it. Most of what is being created aren’t even known, they are just adding on to what we already have so that we feel like we need to have it because we have the previous technology it was made for. For instance “if you remove a keystone technology from your home… how many other devices and equipment would immediately become redundant?”(Kelley 6)  More than half of the stuff we own we wouldn’t need if we removed some form of technology. If you got rid of your phone, think of how many cords you wouldn’t need anymore. In my opinion I do love technology and think my life would be flipped upside down without it, but in some ways it would be flipped upside down for the better.

Technology Essay, Part 2

Everyone has a slightly different opinion on how they think technology is affecting humans, but Caden Colburn, Alexander Yeaton and Kevin Kelley seem to agree with each other. His education would be flipped upside down just at the loss of technology. His bond with technology has grown so big just like Kelley’s has and has gotten to such an extreme extent that their learning is affected.

In my opinion I do love technology and think my life would be flipped upside down without it, but in some ways it would be flipped upside down for the better.

Is technology taking over our world? I guess we will never know until the day comes. It is apparent that technology is growing at an extremely fast rate, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s all bad. Technology helps us in a different way everyday if that means in medicine, education, or just life in general. Yeaton, Colburn, and Kelley see the good in technology and have a genuine love for it. On the other hand I can only say the same to a certain extent. Technology has improved my life and helped me in so many ways but it has also eliminated some of the things I love most; such as communication and in person conversation. I feel technology should be used less but everyone has their own opinion and theirs may be completely different from mine. Technology affects humans for good and bad.
