In paper 2 I had to put two authors into conversation in order to explain the impact of modern technology on humans. I specifically focused on digital technology on young minds. I used Kevin Kelley and Jonathan Haidt and their essays to help me provide evidence to support my claims. In my first body paragraph, I specifically focused on the effects digital technology is having on children mentally and physically. I introduced Kelley’s perspective and provided a quote to follow up on his thoughts. I then explained this quote, and had it lead into Haidt’s thoughts. I then added in a quote by Haidt that corresponded directly to what Kelley was talking about and then explained the quote. I then incorporated both of their thoughts to explain the overall ideas of the paragraph and how their thoughts went together, and how children were being affected physically and mentally by technology. I also later on at the end of this paragraph added in my own thoughts and feelings. It is important to incorporate my own opinion and integrate my ideas into my writing. I got this process of setting up my paragraph from the Barclays formula. I used ways we talked about in class to help me include my own opinion while also leaving room for others and adding the opposite perspective. We focused a lot in class on how to implement sources into our writing and how to write like we were in college and incorporate quotes in a more complex way. I feel my ability to go back into multiple texts and identify quotes that will work well together add them to my writing and have them speak to each other instead of standing alone has improved. My explanation of my quotes has also improved and I have made sure to truly explain why I chose the quote with a throughout explanation. Using sources as evidence in my writing has developed my writing throughout the semester.
