Learning Outcome 3
My approach to active critical reading may be different from others because I struggle with reading comprehension. When I read, if I can, I try to find an audiobook too, so while I read the articles I can also listen to them so that I can comprehend what I am reading better. When I am annotating an essay I immediately highlight anything that stands out to me as interesting. I also tend to highlight numerical values such as data. I feel like the numbers in an article tend to be important information. Also while I am highlighting as I read I write down comments I have while I am reading. This may be an overall thought or something specific to the line. I also write down questions that I would have for the author and try to answer them as I continue to read. If I am given a prompt before reading the essay I look for things that go along with the prompt while I am reading, so that I am immediately set up to write without having to take any extra steps. I feel like I have an easy time drawing relationships and putting different essays together. I have an easy time thinking of new ideas and extending them to correspond with others. I decided to work with “Is Google Making Us Stupid” by Nicholas Carr. I feel that in this article I did a great job annotating and commenting throughout the essay. I was constantly writing down my thoughts and developing questions for the author as I read. I also highlighted many things that stood out to me and lines that seemed important.
